Looking to God in Times of Depression

Looking to God In Times of Depression
Psalm 42

Many times, we get down and depressed. What are we to do when we get depressed? Many people turn to drugs and alcohol which will only give temporary relief and is a “false” comforter. Instead of turning to a “false” comforter, let us turn our eyes upward to our “true” comforter who is God. He is our only hope. He is the only One who can help us and lift us up from despondency.

Here are some George Müller quotes on how he handled trials:

"Truly I prefer by far this life of almost constant trial, if I am only able to roll all my cares upon my Heavenly Father, and thus become increasingly acquainted with Him, to a life of outward peace and quietness, without these constant proofs of His faithfulness." - George Müller

"Do but stand still in the hour of trial, and you will see the help of God, if you trust in Him. But there is so often a forsaking the ways of the Lord in the hour of trial, and thus the food of faith, the means whereby our faith may be increased, is lost." - George Müller

"Wherever God has given faith, it is given, among other reasons, for the very purpose of being tried." - George Müller

Here are ten things to remember when you are depressed and going through trials:

10 Things to Remember when Depressed

1. Remember God

“O my God, my soul is cast down within me; therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan, and from the heights of Hermon, from the Hill Mizar” (Psalm 42:6).

“When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord; and my prayer went up to You, into Your holy temple” (Jonah 2:7).

“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God” (Psalm 42:11).

2. Cast All Your Cares Upon Him

“Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7).

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved” (Psalm 55:22).

3. Wait on the Lord

“Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14).

“Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord” (Psalm 31:24).

4. Don’t be Anxious but Pray

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6-7).

“Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray…” (James 5:13).

5. Keep your mind on God

“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You” (Isaiah 26:3).

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (Psalm 46:10).

6. The Lord will never leave you nor forsake you

Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Heb. 13:5-6).

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rom. 8:35-39).

7. Look to Jesus our compassionate and Great High Priest

“Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:14-16).

“Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them” (Heb. 7:25).

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matt. 11:28-30).

8. Rejoice in Trials & Afflictions. God has a purpose behind them.

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing” (James 1:2-4).

“Rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer” (Rom. 12:12).

“And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us” (Rom. 5:3-5).

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Rom. 8:28).

“It is good for me that I have been afflicted, That I may learn Your statutes” (Psalm 119:71).

9. Abide in His Word

“Remember the word to Your servant, upon which You have caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction, for Your word has given me life” (Psalm 119:49-50).

“You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word” (Psalm 119:114).

“I rise before the dawning of the morning, and cry for help; I hope in Your word” (Psalm 119:147).

“I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I do hope. My soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning— Yes, more than those who watch for the morning” (Psalm 130:5-6).

“Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word” (Psalm 119:67).

10. God will give you His perfect peace; comfort, and grace to go through all your trials. Remember afflictions are only temporary. Look forward for the new heavens and the new earth.

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27).

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (2 Cor. 1:3-4).

“No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it” (1 Cor. 10:13).

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Cor. 4:16-18).

“And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away” (Rev. 21:4).
O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There’s light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free!
Refrain:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

Through death into life everlasting
He passed, and we follow Him there;
O’er us sin no more hath dominion--
For more than conqu’rors we are!

His Word shall not fail you—He promised;
Believe Him, and all will be well:
Then go to a world that is dying,
His perfect salvation to tell!

Call Upon Me In the Day of Trouble

Psalms
"And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me" (Psalm 50:15).
Whenever you are going through trials, afflictions, and distress - do not despair. But look up to God. Call upon Him! He will help you. God is still on His throne. God is in control. God is sovereign and nothing happens in your life without Him knowing about it. Remember Romans 8:28 - that God can work everything out for your good. God knows the end from the beginning. Jesus is the author and finisher of your faith (Heb. 12:2). Jesus will help you get through this trial. Nothing is too hard for God! With God all things are possible. Don't despair! But fully trust in Him. God has a purpose in your trials. His ways are beyond our understanding. He is conforming us to the image of His Son. He is there always for you! Call upon Him in the day of trouble. He will give you relief. He will give you the victory through Jesus Christ. Oh, let us praise the Lord for His mercies and glorify His name forevermore.

"Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator" (1 Peter 4:19).

Oh, praise God for His faithfulness. They are new every morning!

"It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him" (Lam. 3:22-24).

Here are quotes from George Müller

"They that trust in the Lord shall never be confounded!" - George Müller

"But stand still in the hour of trial, and you will see the help of God, if you trust in Him. But there is so often a forsaking the ways of the Lord in the hour of trial, and thus the food of faith, the means whereby our faith may be increased, is lost." - George Müller

Not by Might, Nor by Power, But By My Spirit

6/15/2016

Not By Might, Nor By Power, But By My Spirit
So he answered and said to me:
“This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel:
‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’

Says the Lord of hosts (Zech. 4:6).
Today, we will look at Zechariah 4:6. The Lord says to us:  "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit." Sometimes, we go through a lot of trials and hardship in our Christian life. Sometimes we see no deliverance either on the right or on the left. We tried to seek the help of man but man is limited and cannot really help us. The Bible says, "Give us help from trouble, for the help of man is useless" (Psalm 60:11). Indeed the help of man is useless and vain. Also, we tried to help ourselves and we found we cannot even deliver ourselves. So, what can we do in this case? The only thing to do is to look up to God for He alone is our help. The Psalmist says:

"I will lift up my eyes to the hills--
From whence comes my help?
My help comes from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth" (Psalm 121:1-2).

So, in all our affliction and distress, let us remember the Lord. Let us not fall into despair and despondency. But let us look up to our Heavenly Father who cares for us. God cares even for the small details of our lives. Jesus said, "But the very hairs of your head are all numbered" (Matt. 10:30). Let us go to God today and pour our hearts before Him.

Father, please be with us today and strengthen us. Help us to wait on You and to trust You in all circumstances. Use us to be light and salt in this world. Use us to be a great and bold witness for Christ. Help us to speak the truth in love. Thank you, Lord. In Jesus name. Amen.

"Trust in Him at all times, you people;
Pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us" (Psalm 62:8).

When You are Down, Look Up!

8/22/2015

Many times as Christians we feel cast down. We are “grieved by various trials” (1 Peter 1:6) and “we despair even of life” (2 Cor. 1:8). Yet when we are down, we should always look up! We should look up to Him “who comforts the downcast” (2 Cor. 7:6) and “who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God” (2 Cor. 1:4). The Apostle Paul said “we are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Cor. 4:8-9). There are some noteworthy examples of men in the bible who turned to God in their distress. They are:

The Psalmist

The Psalmist was cast down yet he remembered the Lord and his hope was renewed.

"O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar. Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God? Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God" (Psalm 42:6-11).

Jonah

Jonah’s soul fainted within him and he felt cast out of God’s sight yet he remembered the Lord again and looked again to Him and his hope was renewed.

"Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly. And he said: “I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, And He answered me. “Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice. For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me. Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’ The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head. I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O Lord, my God. “When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple" (Jonah 2:1-7).

The Apostle Paul

The Apostle Paul looked to God for strength and comfort in his time of distress.

"For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us" (2 Cor. 1:8-10).

In conclusion, look to God in your time of distress. He is there to lift you up and to renew your hope to continue. He is the light at the end of the tunnel. He will “never leave you nor forsake you” (Heb. 13:5) and He will be “with you always even to the end of the age” (Matt. 28:20). Jesus said “come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light” (Matt. 11:28-30).

The Hymn - Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There’s a light for a look at the Savior,
And life more abundant and free!

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

His Word shall not fail you—He promised;
Believe Him, and all will be well:
Then go to a world that is dying,
His perfect salvation to tell!

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.

God's 3 Comforting Attributes

8/22/2015

Below are three of God’s attributes that are of great comfort to us when we are distressed and grieved by various trials (1 Peter 1:6). Remember to bring them to mind whenever you are going through severe difficulties.

1. God is Omnipotent

God is omnipotent. He is all-powerful. He is the Lord God Almighty (Rev. 4:8). Nothing is too hard for Him! Three times in the scriptures, God brings the question before us: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” God made the heaven and the earth and is there anything too hard for Him? He spoke and brought the world into existence! God is bigger than our trials and He is the Sovereign God of the universe. He has everything under His control. God can just speak and change our circumstances. Remember what Oswald Chambers said: "We have to pray with our eyes on God, not on the difficulties."

"And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son”" (Gen. 18:13-14).

"‘Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You" (Jer. 32:17).

"“Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?" (Jer. 32:27).

2. God is Omniscient

God is omniscient. He is the all-knowing God. He has absolute perfect knowledge. You might think that no one understands what you are going through but there is someone who understands and knows – and that person is the Lord Jesus who is “God manifested in the flesh” (1 Tim. 3:16). Like the old hymn says: “No one understands like Jesus, He’s a friend beyond compare; Meet him at the throne of mercy, He is waiting for you there.” The bible says that “we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Heb. 4:15-16).

"O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether" (Psalm 139:1-4).

"I will be glad and rejoice in Your mercy, For You have considered my trouble; You have known my soul in adversities" (Psalm 31:7).

3. God is Omnipresent

God is omnipresent. He is present everywhere. You might think God is up in Heaven and He doesn’t see or care about what is going on in your life. Well you are wrong! God sees and cares. The bible says: “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit [give attention to or care for] him?” (Psalm 8:3-4). The bible says that His eye is on the sparrow and surely He watches you and me (Matt. 10:29-31; Luke 12:6-7). He was “The-God-Who-Sees” to Hagar when she in distress in the wilderness (Gen. 16:13) and He was “The-God-Who-Remembers” to Hannah when He saw and remembered her affliction and opened her womb (1 Sam. 1).

"Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,” Even the night shall be light about me; Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, But the night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are both alike to You. For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them. How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You" (Psalm 139:7-18).

A Very Present Help In Trouble

8/17/2015

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1).

God is "our refuge and strength" and He is always available to help us in our troubles. He is the only one we can turn to in our times of distress. God says in His word:  "Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me" (Psalm 50:15). Are you overwhelmed with troubles, anxiety and fear? The Bible says to cast "all your care upon Him, for He cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). Go to God today. He is always there for you.

Father, please be with us today and help us to trust You. Though we cannot see the future, yet help us to trust You that You can carry us through another day. You are in control and You care for us. Please be with us. In Jesus name. Amen.

God Is Bigger Than Your Circumstances

8/16/2015

"And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God" (1 Sam. 30:6).

Are you troubled by your circumstances? No need to be troubled. God is still on the throne and He is in absolute control. God is bigger than your circumstances and He is able to help and deliver you. Just look to Him. David was discouraged and greatly distressed when he considered his outward circumstances. Yet, when He remembered the Lord his God, he was encouraged and found strength in Him. You too, can find encouragement and strength in the Lord.
